NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase points leader Matt Kenseth finished 11th on Sunday at Kansas. He also led 21 laps and got those bonus points. Jimmie Johnson finished sixth. He led six laps, so he, too, got the bonus points. That narrowed the gap between him and Matt to only three points.


I know Jimmie is probably not happy with a sixth-place finish because for the majority of the day on Sunday, he had better than a sixth-place car. To know, however, that you basically lost an engine with a lap and a half to go, got a top-10 finish and closed the gap on the points leader, that No. 48 bunch has to feel they dodged a very large bullet.
Had Jimmie’s engine let go any earlier than it did, we might all be talking about Jimmie finishing back there where Kyle Busch did on his horrible Kansas weekend.
As I mentioned, Matt led some of the race, but he really had a tough time on restarts. The reality is both he and Jimmie seemed to have issues there. A pit road speeding penalty is very uncharacteristic of Matt. Fortunately, it happened early enough in the race that he was able to recover from it to a certain degree.

Knowing how strong they are on the mile-and-a-half tracks plus knowing he won the first two races on the new Kansas surface, I would wager that Matt has mixed feelings about his 11th-place finish.
Unlike a lot of others last Sunday, Matt has to consider himself fortunate. He left Kansas with not only his car in one piece, but also still holds the points lead as we head to Charlotte.
So the bottom line for both Jimmie and Matt: Kansas was probably nowhere near as good a finish as they had hoped for, but both have to realize they dodged a pretty big bullet last week.

Newman wants to finish strong at SHR

Newman focused on the now of finishing strong at Stewart-Haas

With six races left in the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Ryan Newman has every reason to be more focused on the future than the present. Yet, he insists that's not case.
Despite being all but eliminated from title contention and on his way out the door at Stewart-Haas Racing, Newman is determined to finish out the year strong before heading to Richard Childress Racing in 2014.
"I'm entirely 100 percent focused on 2013 and having an opportunity," the driver of the No. 39 Chevrolet said. "I mean, there's a sixth of the season still left. We have a lot of great opportunities, a lot of good racetracks to go to. We're mathematically a long ways out, but we're mathematically not out of it. Realistically, yeah, it's going to be a challenge, but we can move up."
Entering Saturday night's Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Newman ranks 12th among the 13 drivers in the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Newman dropped five positions with a 35th-place finish Sunday at Kansas Speedway, where he was T-boned in the door by a spinning Justin Allgaier.
"We were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got taken out by somebody else's misfortune when Justin crashed," Newman said. "I don't think that our car was great, but I know we were capable of a top-10 run because I know we were better than some of those guys that finished in the top 10. From a points standpoint, our day could have been so much better, but we got pretty tore up. I hit him really hard, and he hit the wall really hard and knocked off a lot of speed before I hit him, and I just had nowhere to go."
Newman still has plenty of incentive to run well, however, during his final weeks with Stewart-Haas - the team he's been with since 2009. Newman is fewer than 20 points behind eighth-place Dale Earnhardt Jr., so there is an opportunity to climb several spots - and potentially pick up a win or two along the way.
Newman's lone victory of 2013 came in July at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the Indiana native captured the prestigious Brickyard 400 at his home track.
"We can do good for our sponsors and ourselves," Newman said. "... Indianapolis was a great weekend for us, and we need to show that we can duplicate that again."
Thrust into the Chase wild-card picture by his Indy win, Newman went on to qualify for the 10-race playoff when NASCAR put him in and took Martin Truex Jr. out following a series of controversial events in the closing laps of the regular-season finale at Richmond.
Newman began the Chase with a 10th-place finish at Chicagoland and has come home 16th, eighth and 35th in the races that have followed. From learning that he wouldn't be retained by Stewart-Haas next year, to signing with RCR, to thinking he had missed the Chase - only to be added two days later - it has certainly been a rollercoaster season for Newman.
To help deal with all the craziness, he has found strength from one of his favorite pastimes.
"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger, no doubt," Newman said. "It's been an up-and-down year on several fronts, career-wise, race-wise, Chase-wise, all those things. But I have an extreme passion for the outdoors. I literally an hour ago was sitting in my tractor planting alfalfa on my farm. I enjoy those things that are a release for me to get away. I used to spend a lot more time at the race shop, but those guys have to focus on their things, and I spend a lot of time at the racetrack talking to those guys, and probably more so than some other drivers.
"In the end, there's a balance there. Whether it's feeding baby deer or taking care of my kids or fishing or whatever, I just enjoy those things that are entirely different from what we do in any given weekend."
As for the racing part, Newman is adamant that his attention remains at Stewart-Haas despite his lame-duck status and the fact he recently spent some time at the RCR shop in Welcome, N.C.
"It's more of a touching base," he said. "It's not about sharing ideas or anything else. It's more about getting things lined up, making sure that we have seats and seatbelts and helmets and all those things getting in order. The second part of that is photo shoots and things like that are still starting and always do start this time of year, so I've actually done one photo shoot with them already. I've been to the shop, but there's no reason not to.
"I'm not sure what (departing RCR driver) Kevin Harvick is doing with SHR right now or anything else. We do what common sense has to happen. The engineering side, the strategy side, the performance side of that, none of that's even at all in consideration right now."

Kyle Busch wrecks again in Kansas


Kyle Busch wrecks again on 'worst racetrack' he's driven on

The third time was not a charm for Kyle Busch on Sunday.
For the third consecutive race at Kansas Speedway, Busch found his car on the wrecker and out of the event early. On Sunday, the final blow came after contact with Carl Edwards and Brian Vickers on Lap 200, but it wasn't his first incident of the day.
"Just fine and dandy," Busch said once his car came to rest in Turn 2.
Issues started for Busch on Lap 1 after Danica Patrick lost control of her car entering Turn 2. After three attempts to fix the No. 18 Toyota, Busch returned to action. After the sixth caution of the day, on Lap 136, Busch stayed on the track for position and restarted second. On the next restart, six laps later, Joey Logano took the No. 18 car three-wide and Busch showed his displeasure during the next caution.
Busch remained up on the wheel and was turned again after he blocked Juan Pablo Montoya on Lap 187 coming to the start-finish line. He restarted 29th but lasted only 10 more laps.
"I have no idea what happened on the last one," Busch said after finishing 34th. "All I know is we're in Kansas, right? Just run over the 18 car and get what you need."
Although Busch entered the race third in the points standings -- 12 points behind leader Matt Kenseth -- he left the track fifth, 35 points behind. Busch may be down, but he doesn't consider himself out of title contention.
"We'll just have to work hard," Busch said. "We'll just have to keep doing what we've done and getting us to this point all year long, and that's been consistency. And every other track except Kansas seems to be able to bode well for us, so we'll see what happens and if it doesn't happen, it wasn't meant to be."
When Busch was asked whether the new tire combination contributed to his issues throughout the weekend, the driver shared blame between the tires and the track, which was repaved last year.
"The racetrack is the worst racetrack I've ever driven on," Busch said. "The tire are the worst tires I've ever driven on and track position is everything. You can't do anything unless you're out front. You get back in traffic -- Kevin Harvick (race winner) couldn't pass me -- he led the first 80 laps of the race, so I'd say it's pretty pathetic."

Harvick leaps ahead in Chase

Obviously Sunday at Kansas was a big day for Kevin Harvick and Richard Childress Racing. Not only did Kevin win the race, but he jumped into third spot in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase points. Don't get me wrong, they still have a lot of work to do. There are only six races left and despite being in third, Kevin is still 25 points out of first place.
Kevin definitely will head into Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday night with a head full of steam, though. Kansas was a mile-and-a-half track. Charlotte is the same length, plus it's one of three mile-and-a-half tracks still left in the six Chase races. I know the No. 29 camp has to be looking back at Loudon, N.H., which is really their only blemish in the four Chase races this year. They simply didn't run very well there. You have to wonder if that 20th-place finish is going to come back to haunt them at Homestead.
Kevin also knows that both Matt Kenseth and Jimmie Johnson, who are first and second in the points, should be really strong at Charlotte Motor Speedway as well. Actually I am anxious to see how the No. 48 runs at Charlotte. They'll be the first to tell you that ever since they repaved the track, Jimmie and crew chief Chad Knaus lost the handle there. Sure, they did win the Sprint All-Star race in May, but that's a different formatted event and one week later they really didn't run well in the Coca Cola 600.
So this weekend we have Charlotte and then the other two races on the mile-and-a-half tracks are at Texas and then naturally Homestead, the last race of the year. You have to factor in when it comes to Kansas, with the new surface and the greater grip level, that there probably won't be a lot that can be transitioned over to these three other tracks.
Kyle Busch had an absolutely disastrous fourth Chase race. He wrecked both his primary and backup car. He dropped from third to fifth in the points. If that wasn't enough, he also went from only 12 points back to now 35 points back. I still believe Kyle has a chance, though. I really think your 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion is going to come from one of those drivers between first and fifth place with six races to go.
I think to be leaving Richard Childress Racing at the end of the year, to be third in the points and have three wins under your belt says a lot of Kevin and crew chief Gil Martin's character. If you remember, back before the season started, some of the talk swirled around would Kevin and this team being a "lame-duck driver/team" operation in 2013. That was easily put to bed a long time ago with the exclamation point put on it Sunday at Kansas.
I hope you also see the irony in the fact that Sunday's first- and second-place finishers, Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch, both are part of the Chase, both are leaving their current teams after Homestead and both going to work for Stewart-Haas Racing.
Also, I just wanted to mention that I am not saying the tire combination that Goodyear brought to Kansas wasn't a good combination. I just think, however, they missed the boat on how they tested it. They did the tire test at Kansas with four teams in mid-July. The temperatures then were much hotter than what we saw at Kansas on Saturday and Sunday.
Now true, they did do the test at night, but the temperatures still weren't anything close to what we saw at Kansas last weekend. I know this right-side tire combination worked well at Atlanta back in September, but they did that test with many more teams in similar weather conditions to the actual race conditions.
When you looked at the track Sunday after 400 miles, the track still never took any rubber. Unless there is something major that happens at a track with the tire in the spring race, I think Goodyear, NASCAR and everyone should work really hard not to make any changes to the tire they are bringing back to that track which happens to be in the Chase. They shouldn't be changing rules, tires, etc. There is simply too much at stake right now.
Goodyear doesn't miss the boat much, but I think it's safe to say they missed the boat on this one at Kansas. It was sad the way it played out because tires simply shouldn't be a variable in the Chase.
I just hope this is a wake-up call. You simply can't go do a tire test, even at night in the heat of July with four teams, when you are coming back in early October with 43 teams racing in temperatures in the 40s and 50s.
